Get out. Make friends. Meet people in NJ.
Back in 2009, a high school classmate and I started a theatre group for young adults who are interested in the performing arts as a creative outlet and a way to make new friends, but who may not have the time to dedicate to a rigorous rehearsal schedule due to work or school, whatever the case may be.
So we created Tomfoolery Theatre, a just-for-fun theatre group with a light and flexible rehearsal schedule to help people make time for the arts in their lives.
Our first season was funded entirely out-of-pocket, with the hope that we would break even thanks to kind-hearted friends, family members and arts enthusiasts in our audience. It was a leap of faith, but it worked, and in the end we were able to make a sizeable donation to the Youth Group at the church that graciously hosts us.
After the devastating earthquake in Haiti last year, we partnered with The Rose Foundation of Haiti, founded by a Haiti native and now chef at our local bar & grill, a popular post-rehearsal hangout located just down the street from our venue. Our production of Once On This Island raised enough money to purchase uniforms for 7 Haitian children so that they may attend school.
After the success of last season's production, for the first time ever, we are close to being able to afford the theatrical licenses necessary for our 2011 summer show outright, without dipping into our own pockets. We have developed a wonderful relationship with The Rose Foundation and plan to continue supporting their cause this year, and in the end the less money we have to dole out for expenses in the end, the greater our donation to the Rose Foundation will be. Tough though it may be, we'd like to surpass last year's donation and make this year the best one yet!
SO...We are selling these t-shirts featuring our logo and the tongue-in-cheek unofficial slogan we've adopted, "Tomfoolery Theatre: Exceeding Low Expectations Since 2009". All of the proceeds from the sale of the shirts will support our summer 2011 production. Check it out, buy a shirt, tell your friends...Tomfoolery Theatre, The Rose Foundation, and the universe will love you for it!
