Get out. Make friends. Meet people in NJ.

Hi everybody, I am looking to take the gmat, and I was going to study with a friend when I realized I am in way over my head. So I'm looking to take a prep course. But there are so many options out there...

Can anyone recommend me one based on their own personal experience?

Thank you!

Hi Marisa,

While I did not take a course when I took my GMAT years ago, I found the Princeton Review study review book, along with Math Power book by Kaplan to be very good. That's all I used when I studied.

If you need to take a class, I believe that both Kaplan and Princeton Review hold orientations and/or sample classes. I would definitely check out the websites,

I used books for my prep as well, starting with Barron's to learn the basics and then Kaplan for the really hard stuff. Kaplan's tests were really rough as I recall, but that's good for putting practice in first before the test. I spent about 4 hours a week for 5 months and about 8 saturday mornings on the test in prep.

From speaking with others, do what worked for you for SAT prep - I loved a lot of practice so the books here were best for me. I know people did well with Princeton Review, but I can't speak from personal experience.

Hi Marisa,

I took the GMAT about 3 years ago and am about to finish up my MBA in a few more weeks.

The books recommended by Sharif and Steve are great. However if you are interested in a tutor, let me know.

Hi Marisa. I too am studying for the GMAT. I highly recommend a series called "GMAT Strategy Guide" it's published by Manhattan GMAT. It preps you by question type. After you've completed the "types" you can move through Kaplan & Baron's which have great practice sections but I felt their strategies weren't as helpful as "Manhatten".

Perhaps take a prep class after you've honed in on your weaknesses & you understand a bit of the test on your own.

Just my 2 cents! Feel free to email if you have any questions or just want to vent.

Hi everybody,

Thanks for your input, my friend has signed us both up for a course with Manhattan review. I'll let you know how it goes and if I like it... and more importantly if I hit my target score.

I'm really surprised you were able to study on your own without a course, but I guess some of us are more disciplined than others :)

thanks again guys... and I will contact you with any questions, which I'm sure will come up eventually.

Good luck. What are your choices for school?

only one choice - Rutgers.

Hi Marisa:

Rutgers is competitive. I am not sure how long you have been out of school or if you are in school. Your GPA is pretty much an uncontrollable factor. Although schools say they do not have a "minimum" score the higher your score the more likely you will be looked at as a candidate. Keep in mind scholarship opportunities as well.

Good Luck and please keep me in mind.

Cool. So, you're not necessarily looking to crack 700 (although I'm sure that getting a high score like that would be nice). Hopefully the course works out well for you.

If you expand your choices to include NYU, feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
