As an avid traveler, I've found it difficult to locate a travel buddy. I'd love to try to "go it alone" either via a tour or on my own. Has anyone successfully travelled solo w/a tour or on their own? Have any recommendations?

Last year, one of my close friends visited and explored Morocco with a tour group for 10 days. He loved every minute of it. He said he met a lot of interesting people on the tour who I believe he still keeps in touch with. I can get you the name of the tour if you are interested.

My suggestion is if it's a new place (outside of US) where you don't know anyone, a tour group might be a good idea. That way, the second time around, you can go on your own. Hope this helps.
Thanks Jahnavi! If it isn't too much trouble, I'd love to know the name of the tour company your friend used. I'm leaning towards using a tour for my first time traveling alone.

I LOVE to travel and also find myself limited b/c friends either can't take time off or don't have the funds. I've traveled pretty extensively internationally as a flight attendant, and have gone solo in the U.S. I've gone back and forth with the tour idea b/c I like to do my own thing. Depending on the country your traveling to, solo travel can be exciting instead of scary! Where are you thinking of heading?
I've traveled a few times alone to the Carribean. If you do that, I recommend finding an all-inclusive resort. Everything is right there for you and there are usually plenty of people to talk to and meet.
I'm not sure when you are looking to go, but in the summer i went on vacation alone to a place called Club Getaway. You meet so many people, most of whom come alone, and I had an amazing time.
I have traveled solo before. I took a 4 day trip to Hong Kong, and actually lived in Taiwan for a year so I did many things solo before I really met people.

Traveling solo definitely has its benefits, you do what you want when you want to and it’s often easier to meet people. On the down side there is no one to share the cost of lodging with and if you are in a very foreign place sometimes its easier to have a friend with you to share the stressful points and fun times with.

I think everyone should take at least one solo trip in their life. At the end you will feel empowered and realize just how self sufficient you are. On the flip side I would say it’s more fun to travel with friends having been a solo traveler and traveled with friends.

If you do decide to take a trip on your own, the key is having a good guidebook, a phrase book so if you are around no one that speaks English you can communicate to get to where you want and of course a good sense of adventure! I love lonely planet guide books. You also want to travel light and not bring too many expensive things with you. Keep it simple.
Last summer, I traveled to Peru without any of my family / friends. I wasn't completely alone, though. I signed up for a tour through GAP Adventures. It was amazing! All the activities were optional, so you decided what you wanted to do. If you had other ideas, the guides (who were extremely knowledgeable and friendly) would set something up. I ended up going horseback riding, paragliding, hiking in the Andes, etc. I would absolutely travel with them again.
Hi Jill,

My friend used GAP Adventures for the tour. Here's the link to the tour he went on: http://www.gapadventures.com/tour/DCKD

Happy Traveling!!!
Thanks Nanette for the post...I'm hoping to head to Rome. I don't know why I'm so scared to travel alone! I'm learning towards taking a tour for my first solo adventure.

Wow...thanks for following-up on this. Sounds like a lot of people had good success w/GAP.

Although I wasn't completely alone (I went with one other person), I did spend a month backpacking Italy. Rome is really easy to do because there are a TON of safe, clean hostels and plenty of people traveling solo to meet up with.

Hello Jill, check out the link below. Is for a group out of NYC called Dynamic Outdoors. The plann trips both abroad and within the US. Some are adventure driven like climbing and skiing. Others are more "exotic" like Greece. The nice thing about this group is that you will meet tons of young people. I've had experience with them and so far all trips have been good. Hope this helps.
