Looking for an apartment in Montclair
My lease is up on my apartment in Jersey City and I have decided that rather than spending half my money on rent, there are other things I'd like to spend (and save) my money on and so I am moving back west. I'm looking for a 2 bedroom apartment (but would consider a very large 1 bedroom) with a washer and dryer IN the unit, that allows cats. It needs to be in a safe neighborhood and walking distance to transportation (preferably train, but will deal with bus) to NYC. Looking for something under $1900 (preferably under $1500), starting 9/15. Yes I have been looking on Craigslist and other websites - I'm just posting here in case someone knows of something that will be available but hasn't been posted yet!!
I will also consider surrounding towns (Nutley, Clifton, Verona, Cedar Grove, West Orange) as long as they're directly on a NYC transportation route and in a safe area.

If interested I will ask soemone who lives in South Orange (I believe) She has literally a 5 minute walk and a direct track to NYC. I think it takes 20-30 minutes. Let me know.

Thanks Kristen! I actually used to live in Caldwell for 3 years (and still own a condo there but have chosen to let my tenant stay another year rather than kick her out and move back in!) and I took the train every day from Bay Street in Montclair to NYC. The commute became unbearable with my current job though which is why I moved to JC last year. My boyfriend would like to move in with me but he hates JC/Hoboken and we'd like to save money to move across country next year so that's why we're looking a little further west. He currently lives in Bloomfield. I have lived in Madison before as well but don't want to move back that far west. I'm really just hoping to get a hot tip on an awesome place that I can jump on before it gets advertised!!

Thanks Akhtar, but as Kristen mentioned I'm a little wary of South Orange as it doesn't have the greatest reputation (granted, parts of Montclair aren't so nice either ... ). I'm a long distance runner so I need to have a fairly large radius around me of areas that are safe for a woman to run alone in!

Hi, I have to put my "2 cents" about South Orange. South Orange is generally safe but of course there are different parts just like all areas, you are right about that. Part of South Orange borders the town, train and close to beautiful houses, trees, parks and the towns of Livingston and Maplewood. This part is extremely safe. The part close to Seton Hall is the part that is more questionable. The direct train line gets you into the city in about 30 minutes.
There are parts of West Orange that you need to be careful of, same with Verona and both don't have direct train lines into the city. That's the challenging part. Good luck to you! I know a lot of the areas well so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Stacey, thanks for the info on South Orange! My geography isn't the greatest and I really have no experience with the Oranges ... I didn't even realize that it borders Livingston and Maplewood ... although knowing that, I think it might be on the outskirts of my ideal distance. I will look into though!

My landlords are renting an apartment on the first floor of my building in Little Falls. It's technically a two-bedroom, though you have to go through the first to get to the second. There are washer and dryer hookups in the unit that were just renovated, but no machines. The last tenant had a cat, so I assume it's cat-friendly. The Little Falls train station is a few blocks away and there's a bus to Port Authority right outside the building.
I've lived in the neighborhood for more than five years, and I haven't had a problem. I think the rent's in the $1200 neighborhood, but don't quote me on that. If you're interested, I can give you my landlords' number,
If anyone's looking for a 1BR in Little Falls, they also have a few. The fringe benefit is that you get to be my neighbor, and a couple of the apartments share a yard with me. You know what that means: epic barbecues!

Craigslist is how I found the realtor that found my apartment in Montclair, Laura. There should be enough apartments available in Montclair at this time for that price. I saw an apartment at this place called the Montclarian on Walnut, near the train station. It was a nice place. It was between that and the apartment I have now. No laundry in the unit, though. But it did have facilities.
