NJ's Hackerspace: Learn to program (android/java/python/c), make electronics/beer/art, and support a non-profit!

So one of my resolutions was to get back in helping out an organization I helped out at its start - our state's only hackerspace! As a result, I'm going to be teaching some upcoming classes.

But first... "What is a hackerspace?" is probably the first thing that comes to mind. A hackerspace is much like an artists collective. It's a place where technically minded individuals come together and pool their resources, tools, and most importantly - skills and knowledge - and share them amongst members. We have members of all different ages, skills, and backgrounds working together on a whole host of projects. And it's not just limited to the typically thought-of geekery.

For instance, some of our upcoming events include:

  • Beginner to advanced Android mobile application programming classes
  • Java classes
  • Beer brewing classes and meetup.
  • Arduino/micro controller starter classes and projects

We also have the following hardware available:

  • Tons of electronics equipment
  • Free server space and processing power
  • Tons of tools
  • 3d printer (print out 3d objects in a hard plastic)
  • Laser cutter
  • (Hopefully coming soon) CNC machine
  • Steel welder

Our classes and meetups are held either for free or very cheap - we're a non-profit, so our only goal money-wise is to pay our rent and the utilities bill.

If you don't know how to DO any of this stuff, that's ok - we have people of vastly different skills as members and we teach anyone anything :-).

I myself will be teaching the Android classes. If you want to learn how to develop applications for your Android phone, come on by.

Got any questions? Feel free to ask!

Im trying to learn Java currently! Are there any java nights?  I also want to maybe soon get into android dev also.

Java nights are something thats being discussed and not yet scheduled, but will be soon. I'd suggest coming in to an open hack night and discuss Java with some members. Play around with a tutorial or two while there and most likely you'll get some feedback/advice from members who know Java well.

I've learned Java best though by being dropped in the middle of a project that required knowledge of Java. Learn by doing - heh.  You could also attend the getting started session for android and see if you can pick it up fast enough.

Keith,

Is the next Android class on 21st Feb? I'm interested.

Nishan,

Android dev requires Java/XML skills (which I possess immensely). I'll be glad to share my knowledge with you. May be if I like these guys, I'll offer to teach some classes.

The 21st is an open session that's free. It is for absolute beginners - I and anyone who's experienced help people set up their programming environments and get started in Android. It's not really a "lesson" so to speak. But of course, all are welcome to that or any Thursday (which are open hack nights).

I may have to check out the Android intro.  Thanks for the info!
is the android night at 7 or 8... on the front page it says 7 but the calendar says 8

Android is tonight at 7 - I'll contact people to fix the calendar.

Timothy - no, we do not have weekly classes yet. I hope to get a monthly developers meetup started and to teach occasional (once a month) classes. In the next two months I'll be teaching numerous classes.
