Without using the internet, tell me why we celebrate Cinco de Mayo:

When YPs bought their tickets for tonight's NJYP Cinco de Mayo Fiesta they were asked "Without using the internet, tell me why we celebrate Cinco de Mayo".  All 60+ replies are below :)

a mexican holiday, their independence??
An excuse to drink beer! (Also, Mexican Independence Day)

hispanic freedom day of celebration
honestly, all I know is that it is a Mexican Holiday...good question!
I believe it's a holiday celebrating Mexican culture, food, etc.
I have a feeling it's not "Remember the Alamo"?
I have no clue.
I'm not sure, it's much bigger in America than in Mexico.  It's barely celebrated there so I think its an excuse for Americans to party really. :)
Incorrectly, many say it's the mexican celebration of independence. I know that that is a misconception. I do not, however, know the real cause for celebration so I will now instead pretend that it is the birthday of tequila. O-le, senor tequila, borrando de memoria!
Indepedence
Is it for springtime harvest?
It coincides with Dia de los Muertes, celebrated in Mexico.
It is celebrated Nationwide in the U.S. as a celebration Mexican heritage and pride and actually not an important day in Mexico.
It's a Mexican holiday and Mexico, like US, is part of North America.
It's a Mexican holiday that represents Mexican pride, but not Independence from Spain. On the other hand, it's an excuse for Americans to drink and be merry.
It's like Fourth of July for Mexico!
It's to celebrate the Mexicans taking over the US ;)

When Titanic sank, it was carrying tons of European mayonnaise which was evantually en route to Mexico. Heart broken Mexicans named a holiday after mayo that sank that day, called "Sinko De Mayo" which eventually became "Cinco de Mayo"
We won a battle but unfortunately got our asses kicked again about a year later
This is hilarious.
