Are There Any Photography Lovers on NJYP?

Hello my name is Jen; I’m an art enthusiast & photography lover (in my own right), lol. Although I am in the technology/medical field working as a biomedical-clinical engineering equipment technician by way of being a former art history major @ RU, Douglass College – I like to spend my time learning photography. ANYHOW, the purpose of this forum is to get to meet others who share the same passion, have good pointers/tips to help me advance; or if you know any good websites/books & such that'll help me better my craft.

Also, by any chance if you are selling or know someone who is selling pre-owned/used (but in good condition) photography equipment that goes with or can be used with a Nikon D200 please feel free to contact me. Thanks!

I Have the Nikon D200... love it!!! I would never sell any of my photography equipment. Even the 35mm cameras... what's a couple 10 or so cameras....

I would love a photo walk! How fun! :o) I only have a point-and-shoot, but I'm hoping to get a DSLR in the future.

@Dave this is one very cool+nice picture, thx for sharing. I think before ALL the trees are bare I need to get some outdoor nature shots just to practice.

Thx Derrick, and I do agree that trial & error plus knowing your camera's functions. But I definitely have to check out that place. What camera do you have?

I haven't been on the board in quite some time and it's so funny that I came across this topic because I've been wanting to get back into photography for a while now. I took a beginners class for it in college but I don't remember a thing. Of course it wasn't for digital photography but I think the concepts might be the same, then again maybe not. =) I've been thinking about buying a new, more professional camera but I don't know where to start. I've heard good things about Nikon and Canon. A lot of my friends prefer Canon but it seems like some use Nikon on here. Has anyone ever used both and can tell me why they like one over the other? And maybe a good model to invest in. Someone I know has a Nikon D90 and the pictures are amazing, but I don't know if it's necessary to spend that kind of money since I am a beginner.

Hey everyone - just officially joined NJYP today and was really excited to see this post!

I've been shooting for over 4 years now and recently got into going "semi-pro." It's great to see other photo enthusiasts on here and cool to see everyone's work. I think photography related events on NJYP would be really cool! As someone mentioned above, I would love to do a photowalk - that's basically when you get a group of people together anywhere and shoot together (for example, around NYC, in a local park, etc).

There are TONS of online resources (many that are free) that you can use to learn more about photography. If anyone is interested, I can definitely point out some resources.

Hey Darlene,

I currently use a Nikon D40 - I've used Canon previously as well. Honestly, there is no really big difference between either brand. Some people get really, um, passionate :) about their brand but I find both to be great to work with. I like my Nikon just because I'm used to it and will probably stick to Nikon in the future - but that doesn't mean Canon is any better or worse.

If you are a beginner, I would suggest a Nikon D40, D40x or D60. (I'm only recommending Nikon stuff here because I don't know much about beginner level Canons.) You probably don't need some super crazy expensive camera because you probably won't use most of the features until you start learning more. I've used my D40 for almost 3 years now and I think I'm finally ready to trade up.

Thanks Preeti and Derrick for the advice and links! I'm going out tomorrow to look at some cameras and maybe go from there. I'm very excited to get back into photography-it's been a long time but hopefully after a little practice it will all come back to me!
